Discover the boat

A spacious house on the water

Thank you for your interest in Wild Baleine, based in Lavrio (airport: Athens).

A trampoline, a lounge on the foredeck, a sundeck beside the cockpit overlooking the boat, a 360° view from the saloon, air conditioning, electric toilets in each cabin, separate showers, a watermaker, solar panels, a generator…

You will have all the space and comfort you need for every activity: a dive into the water, sunbathing, a meal in the shade of the aft deck, or simply relaxing under the Greek sun, gently rocked by the blue water.

You and your loved ones will settle comfortably into this very pleasant catamaran: an apartment on the water that carries you quietly into a sheltered, deserted creek.

Whether aboard Wild Baleine or another boat, I wish you a wonderful sailing holiday in Greece.

The skipper

Hello,

Dani and I — Pierre — are married: she is Austrian, I am French. We speak French (what a surprise!), English and German. My Spanish is weak but revivable. Dani also speaks Arabic.

I am the skipper of Wild Baleine, together with Dani. Dani has lived in Austria, in Africa and in Hong Kong; I have lived in France, Austria and Hong Kong. We met in Austria. We are preparing Wild Baleine for a round-the-world voyage — starting with an Atlantic circuit.

I learned to sail at the Glénans school in Brittany: no engine, no electronics (no GPS, no radar), no toilets… Glénans was then a school for purists, on old wooden boats weighing tons, doing harbour manoeuvres under sail. At least we had winches rather than block and tackle: sheer luxury! Another era. As a student I took part in races through the school, notably between the Isle of Wight and Saint-Malo.

Later I chartered boats with friends, then with my children. A few years ago I bought a catamaran, to keep the kids safe on board without being stressed. In hindsight: a choice I do not regret for a second.

I delivered Wild Baleine from La Rochelle to Athens, around Gibraltar: 2,559 miles. I would gladly do it again, with more time to enjoy the coast.

I hold an Austrian sailing licence type IV (offshore, no distance limit from the coast). I regularly take courses: sailing, survival, first aid, engine maintenance, electrics, sail repair… A course makes nobody a professional, but it does give you a feel for the subject.

I have found myself in difficult situations at sea. Even when you believe you can handle them — and perhaps even enjoy them somewhat — the aim is still to avoid them. The sea is an element best respected: better to stay within your comfort zone than to push limits that are often closer than you think.

So when conditions are hard, as the skipper I would rather decide to stay in harbour than risk damage that would spoil the rest of the holiday. That decision is never easy — especially when you watch others head out. But from experience: better to spend the day over a drink, shopping, or sightseeing.

The sea is a magnificent playground. But it must be taken seriously. That is my approach; everyone is entitled to their own. Now you know mine.

Kind regards, Pierre
